The following is my abbreviated guide installing Raspbian on an SD card. You may also choose to follow: https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/installation/installing-images/ which may work better for those starting on a Windows or MacOS system.

Obtain the latest image from here:

https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/raspbian/

Once you have downloaded the file you can unzip it with:

unzip 2017-03-02-raspbian-jessie-lite.zip

Then run a:

df -h

Look at what is mounted. Then attach the SD card reader to your computer and pop the card into the reader. Run

df -h

The new device that has appeared is your SD card. Then

sudo umount /dev/sdd1

replacing sdd1 with whatever your SD card's device name is (including the partition number). If there is also a sdd2 then remove that as well.

You will now write the image to your SD card. Run the following, being careful to check the image name and the device.

sudo dd bs=4M if=2017-03-02-raspbian-jessie-lite.img of=/dev/sdd
